Frequently Asked Questions

About CrossFit for Teens

My teen is already active in sports. How will this program help them improve?

Your teen’s coach is likely very busy these days, and need to dedicate their time to sport specific skills. As a compliment to this, our coaches here at Freedom Pointe can help with athletes’ overall strength, and reduce the risk of both preseason and in-season injuries. Our programming has built in goals of optimizing physical competence in the following fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory, endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Improved overall fitness leads to better athletes.

I would like my teen to be more physically active, but they have no interest in organized sports. Is this a good program for them?

Absolutely! All of our movements and weights are scaled for each individual’s ability, to meet them where they are currently at. We want to share the message that fitness can be FUN, and to create a community of confident individuals and supportive friendships. Our goals are to boost teen’s self-esteem and confidence so they can be more physically and mentally prepared to face any obstacle thrown at them inside OR outside the gym. We focus on age appropriate weightlifting and gymnastics with high intensity training to deliver optimal fitness and performance, as well as a lifelong love of fitness.

Is lifting at a young age a good idea?

Yes! The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees! Kids need a daily dose of impact loading (jumping rope, box jumps, running and resistance training), as well as vestibular training (forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels) to develop strong bones, balance, and coordination. Strength is gained neuromuscularly through body weight gymnastics movements and mechanics. Consistency and enough testosterone are present to warrant use of external objects and weights.

I’d like to learn more about your coaching staff. Where can I learn more?

Excellent question! We are very proud of our coaches and what they bring to the table. Not only do every single one of our coaches have lists of certifications and credentials before walking in the door, but we make sure they are constantly learning and gaining even more knowledge to give our members and kids the most up to date, safe, and quality experience there is to offer. I have heard that CrossFit causes a lot of injuries. How do I know my teen will be safe?

Just like any sport, there is always a risk for injury. Your teen could develop “thrower’s elbow” in baseball for pitching too hard and with incorrect technique. The common denominator in injuries is generally the same: not performing properly. Here at Freedom Pointe, our goal for our athletes is longevity. It is important for us to teach the foundations of movement and technique at a young age to avoid injury. When athletes perform movements correctly and with the appropriate weight for their skill and strength level, their chances of injury decrease significantly. The last thing we want is for your teen to become injured, so we make sure to give them the tools they need to approach fitness safely and appropriately.
